Pedicure Essentials Warm weather means sandals, bare feet and regular pedicures. Remove dry skin and calluses. Soak feet in warm water for at least five minutes, then wet a pumice stone or foot file and rub feet using a back-and-forth motion. Don’t be tempted to use a callus shaver for immediate satisfaction. It can remove too much skin and lead to infection, according to Leslie Campbell, D.P.M., of the American Podiatric Medical Association.
Moisturize. Apply an emollient-rich foot cream with shea butter to seal in moisture or alpha-hydroxy acid (aha) for extra smoothness and exfoliation. Shielding your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is always a priority, especially in summer. But not all products that claim to protect do the job. What to look for on the label: SPF The higher the number, the more protection. For skin that burns after 10 minutes, an SPF of 30 technically allows 300 minutes of burn-free exposure (less sweating, swimming and rubbing). UVA/UVB The sun emits two types of rays that affect skin. UVB rays cause immediate, visible damage, like sunburn, and contribute to skin cancer. UVA rays penetrate deeper and cause premature aging.

Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) This chemical protector absorbs UVA and UVB rays. Try Hawaiian Tropic Oil Free Faces Sunblock SPF 30, $8. Get the most out of your sunscreen: Apply prior to sun exposure. Some sunscreens can take up to 15 minutes to become fully effective, explains James SaNogueira, senior director of suncare research and development for Banana Boat. Don’t skimp. Less product means less protection. Use a golfball-size amount for your entire body.

Beginners should use the palest shade and a light touch. Fix mishaps. Use a damp Q-tip to remove color buildup along the hairline or eyebrows. If feet or hands look overdone, apply a lotion containing aha to remove excess tanner.
