HOLLYWOOD, California — Hot on the heels of Felicity Huffman’s award-winning turn in TransAmerica, Academy Award Winner Catherine Zeta-Jones is rumored to be eying a starring role in an upcoming film about a transgender cabaret performer.

According to the New York Post, Catherine Zeta-Jones is being lined up to play real-life ’1960s cabaret artist April Ashley in an upcoming film.

The biopic would look at how Ashley’s sex change affected her marriage to aristocrat Baron Rowallan. That marriage was ultimately annulled in court.

Zeta-Jones is currently in production on Coming Out, the story of a gay soccer coach in Wales. Jones developed the picture with her younger brother, who is gay, and they are expected to begin filming next month. Alan Cumming plays the coach. Zeta-Jones is his understanding hairdresser.

Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for her work in 2003’s Chicago, with critics widely praising her dancing and singing abilities. The actress is expected to do both again in the upcoming biopic.

Meanwhile, husband Michael Douglas once joked that he thought Catherine was a "man in drag" when they first met because she didn’t kiss him until they'd been dating for nine months.
